Free-to-play Final Fantasy MMORPG

Final Fantasy XIV is a free-to-play adventure game from Square Enix. This MMORPG title takes you to the fictional world of Hydaelyn, with a lot of customization options. You choose the name, race, physical traits, and class. As a massive game with servers all around the world, it offers a host of automatically translated content to allow players to communicate.

With a compelling story and a lot of in-game content, this Final Fantasy XIV is a definite save from its 2010 release. While it can be a pretty standard online RPG fare, it’s still a good FF title to check.

Interact with a persistent world

This Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) originally released in 2010. After a crushing critical and commercial failure, it was remade into the current version it is today. Like most games in the genre, it allows you to create your own in-game avatar with the option to change your appearance, as well as choose from one of the eight initial job classes.

For the game, it features a persistent world. This means that, basically, the world continues to move and work by itself even without player interaction. It creates a realistic, living world that runs even when you’re not around. This works perfectly well with the fictional world of Hydaelyn and its four initial major city-states and various settlements available all around.

As a free-to-play MMORPG, FFXIV is unfortunately not available in certain regions. As of its Dark Throne update, it is only available in North America, Europe, and selected parts of Eastern Asia. The early game also has a steep challenge because it is quite grindy and boring because of your character’s skill restrictions. However, once you get through your first job change at level 30, the game starts picking up.

The FF you can play with friends

Overall, Final Fantasy XIV is the MMORPG gift that continues to keep on giving. The Dark Throne patch, for example, opens new events and lets you solo Stormblood dungeons while its predecessors slowly added character classes and so on. While its early game is quite boring, it serves the purpose of bringing the world forward before you get addicted to the action and fantasy shortly after.

PROS

  • Features a persistent in-game world
  • Has a lot of character classes to choose from
  • Offers a lot of in-game content

CONS

  • Only available in selected regions
  • Early game is pretty grindy
